Method

Step-by-Step Directions

1

Prepare your containers

Make sure the tins or jars are clean and completely dry. Set them out before you begin because the finished salve starts firming as it cools.

2

Measure the infused oils

Combine 2 fl oz plantain-infused oil and 2 fl oz calendula-infused oil in a heat-safe cup or double boiler.

3

Add the beeswax

Weigh 0.5 oz (14 g) beeswax and add it to the infused oils.

4

Melt gently

Warm over gentle indirect heat until the beeswax is fully melted. Stir occasionally and avoid unnecessarily high heat.

5

Do the spoon test

Place a few drops on a chilled spoon and let them cool for a minute. Check the firmness before pouring the full batch.

6

Adjust if needed

If it is softer than you want, melt in a little more beeswax. If it is too firm, stir in a small amount of additional infused oil and test again.

7

Add optional vitamin E

Remove from heat. Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then stir in the optional vitamin E.

8

Pour and cool

Pour immediately into prepared containers. Leave uncovered until completely cool and firm, then cap and label.

Customize the Texture

Soft or Firm Salve?

For a Softer Salve

Use slightly less beeswax or add a little more infused oil. This works well when you want the salve to spread easily over a larger area.

For a Firmer Salve

Add a little more beeswax. A firmer salve can be useful in warmer weather or in small tins carried in a bag.

Storage

Keeping the Salve Fresh

Store Cool & Dry

Keep the finished salve tightly capped and away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Use clean, dry fingers or a small applicator when possible.

Watch the Oils

The salve's useful life is largely limited by the freshness of the carrier oils. Discard it if the aroma becomes rancid or you notice moisture, mold, or another sign of spoilage.

For topical use. Patch test before broader use, especially if you have sensitive skin. Calendula is in the Asteraceae family, so people with known sensitivity to plants in that family may want to use extra caution. Do not use a homemade salve as a substitute for appropriate care for deep wounds, puncture wounds, significant burns, or signs of infection.
